Well, I’m in Wilmington for a month of work and I’m sorry to say that posts likely will be a little hit and miss for a while. I’ll try to keep posting as long as I have the energy, but they may be a little short in tooth and quality. The drive from Asheville to Wrightsville Beach isn’t a bad one – about five and a half hours or so and you literally go from mountains to the ocean, which is always kind of fun. I ran the iPod on shuffle the whole way and two of my realizations were that 1) I haven’t listened to Mastodon in quite a while and 2) I freaking love Mastodon. I know that’s a fairly trendy thing to say, but so be it. If there’s a more unique, odd, technical, heavy, melodic, and humorous band in metal right now then I’d love to hear them (seriously, please tell me if I’m missing out on something good). And since I’m right here by the old Atlantic, I figured I’d pull today’s video from the Moby Dick inspired and ridiculously great album Leviathan. Here’s “Sea Beast:”
You may have seen the commercials by now letting us know that a new restoration of the Godfather trilogy is out on DVD and Blu-Ray this week. I haven’t got my hands on this set yet, but it’s good news for film and music fans alike. Nino Rota’s score, particularly the main theme, is undoubtedly a key contributor to the success of these films. Not only that, you can rock out to it. Watch Slash get his Corleone on back in the Guns days:
And here’s Fantomas (Mike Patton’s 432nd side project) with their take:
If you’re bored one day, do a search for “The Godfather theme _______” at YouTube and just fill in that blank with any old thing and see if you don’t find a video for it. I tried banjo, harmonica, bells, kazoo, hip hop, and recorder and found videos for all of them. It’s kind of nuts! Naturally, there’s even an 8-bit version:
So get the movies, enjoy the renditions, and have a bloody disgusting weekend.
Had a request yesterday for the following vid. Wasn’t so much a request as it was a threat, but still…I appreciate the gesture. Not to mention, this song is pretty fun. You’ll recognize the tune and probably get a laugh out of who they choose to cut to when they first show anyone in the audience. Totally racist.
And that’s fun and all, but I think I like this one even better:
Also, want to just take a minute to sing the praises of VH1 Classics. Hands down, this is the best music television channel in America (and possibly elsewhere). I know saying that is basically like proving I’m over thirty without having to show a birth certificate, but so be it. For starters, they show music videos. Lots of music videos. And then they also show concerts, documentaries, and music related movies. Last night they ran the three hour Scorsese-directed Dylan documentary No Direction Home. It’s a great, revealing look at Dylan’s attitude about what he was doing when he started more so than even featuring the music itself. The collected footage from concerts and interviews is pretty astounding and I highly recommend seeing it if you can (I’m sure they’ll replay it or it’s on DVD). Here’s “Maggie’s Farm” from another doc called Festival to get you in the mood:
